Old Goa, Panjim and Carnival – the Portuguese culture in Goa

Today and yesterday I visited Old Goa and Panjim. Old Goa was the the capital of former Portuguese India as Panjim is the capital of the state Goa. The Portuguese influence of 450 years of reign is still very present. People of the older generation still speak Portuguese as their mother tongue. Old Goa represents the former power and wealth of the Portuguese Empire in Asia. It inherits a huge amount of impressive churches as the biggest church of Asia the Sé Cathedral as well as the Basilica Bom Jesus where the body of the holy Xavier’s kept.
Panjim and it’s still well-kept old quarters reminded me of Lisbon. Also the today’s carnival in Benaulim showed how strong the culture was influenced. Very interesting to see this in India.
