Agra – the old capital of the Mughal rulers

Agra – the capital of Mughal rulers
On Sunday I made a one day visit to Agra which is the city if the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort. While Agra itself is a huge and chaotic city the Mogul constructions are precious and full of art. The Taj Mahal definitely was the highlight on this visit. Emperor Shahjahan built the Taj as a memorial for his queen known as „Mumtaz Mahal“. Craftsmen from Persia and Italy designed his monument of love.
The combination of white marble, colourful ornaments and black calligraphic writing gives a very interesting motive especially by reflecting the sunlight. This also can be seen in the Red Fort but also in the Chini-Ka-Roza and Itmad-Ud-Daulah which are as the Taj Mahal mausoleums.
The Red Fort stands for the climax of Mughal rule and power in India. It is hard to imagine how the Marathas and the British could conquer as it is a truly massive fortress.
Next stop: Amritsar – the holy city of the Sikhs in Punjab
